redboxproject.orgIt's appalling in this day and age that women can't afford basic sanitary products. One manager of a local supermarket said that these products were stolen more than anything else. Food banks are asking for more things now, ranging from food to shower gel and now sanitary products. Trisha

Or teach them to think for themselves. When I was a kid, toilet paper was not uncommon in the main.
Just because you can't afford the right stuff doesn't mean you do without.

6herry, I used to use cut up sheets and they would get washed. Newspapers and later izal were the used for toilet paper, not good absorbancy! I think sanitary towels started getting popular in the ?60's. I can't imagine girls using anything else. One reusable way would be the Mooncup, I'm not certain that I would have used one.

I actually find it hard to believe that these are something no one could afford. I think you can buy a packet of value ones from supermarkets for under 30p, the sort of loose change you find down the side of the sofa.
Agree with what you've said about making do too, tissue, cotton wool, cotton fabric. I'm quite suspicious of some of the ads on the tv at times, sometimes think they're made to make the government look bad by other parties, not that I'm ever in agreement with any government.

My thoughts are that food banks are just that, and personal hygiene products are up to the individual to buy, after all, if they are already receiving food bank donations then the savings made on food can then be spent on toiletries etc.
As for providing for school girls, it seems having 4-5 days off each month is a good excuse to laze around, schools have to be savvy on this one.

I’ve read about girls missing school during periods but it was referring to girls around the world not in the U.K. I cannot imagine not having had access to pads and tampons! I’m still grateful that I no longer have a need for them! I haven’t looked up the price of a packet of pads, will do so now!

There was an advert on the tv LL, about girls in the UK not being able to afford them too, I was shocked.
