Aston Martin and Pets at Home and some of the food companies have started for fear of not getting parts or supplies if we have a no deal. Are any of the employers you work for doing so? Some medical suppliers are doing this as they supply the NHS.

I'm surprised (or naive) Badpuss, it's not like we can't buy things from other countries in the interim. I think the Uk will be comforted by all the other countries willing to have deals with us once we're out, obviously NHS is a different kettle of fish so can't comment on that one as don't know enough.
Here's a question though..will anything happen to Aldi or Lidl?

As an ex nhs manager. I used to stockpile stuff in march when I had money left over. It's a standard practice.

We can buy but with no deal there will be a hard border ie in Ireland documents will have to be processed and lorries inspected. Inspecting thousands of vehicles will take much longer which will be disastrous for perishable supplies and some medicines. There is no agreement yet for lorries to drive through the EU and Aeroplanes to to pass over the EU. Some countries are passing interim legislation to allow this if we get no deal. The car industry and others operate on Just In Time ie they only receive parts deliveries a day or even a few hours before they need them to avoid higher inventory costs. They cannot guarantee the parts will be delivered quickly so are stockpiling instead and bearing higher inventory costs.
As for Aldi, it depends on the agreement. If we have no deal we will operate on WTO terms and by their tariff guidelines. The products sent to the EU from countries that are not in trade groups like EFTA pay higher export tariffs if they sell to the EU. This might happen to us. If however we negotiate a trade deal with the EU we may have lower tariffs if foodstuffs are imported from Europe.
I noticed some of the Morrisons's own brand cream cheese is made in other countries in the EU but from Danish milk.
Ireland Will suffer most from a hard border because they export a huge amount to England more than we export to them. The EU spokesmen said they believed that if we have a soft border companies with low ethical standards would set up in England so they could cheat the EU and send products to Ireland and other countries which would have lower environmental standards and whose staff were not governed by strong employment regulations, They would know their lorries and products would not be subject to strict inspection.

Thank you Badpuss, you've actually explained that better than any politician

Thank you.
On a lighter note, if you were to stockpile food. What would you choose? Me? I don't know. Hubs has a variety of meds that would cause problems if they were unavailable. His blood thinning med is the one that makes me worry, without it he would probably have another stroke.

Things we import and cannot be gained easily here. I noticed a lot of hair and beauty products are made in Germany or Switzerland eg hair dye. Cleaning products are often made abroad. Olives, Kidney beans, some soaps and shampoo if I want a particular brand. I can swop some foodstuffs to British brands ie Cornish Brie.

There were some Dutch vegetable suppliers on tv last night, they were saying that if there was a 'no deal' then they were hoping to set up a plan, so that their lorries were checked during the ferry crossing and then allowed to go on their way without further checking and given the priority fast lane out of the port.
I changed channels in error on my morning wake up call radio alarm, by mistake I tuned to radio 4, there was a brexit interview on, and the lady talking said, that going up to the 29th March was the easy bit............not a very reassuring comment, I hurriedly changed to my local channel.
I not sure what to stockpile, any ideas?

Not stockpiling as such - maybe a few extra bags of pasta and store cupboard stuff in case prices increase, but I'm growing more of my own fruit and veg this year. First spuds going in today, few more fruit trees bought. Can bottle or freeze produce.

We also have a herb patch at the bottom of the garden and we grow rhubarb too.

Doing a shop yesterday in Waitrose, I looked at where every product was made. Can you believe my Dove anti perspirant is made in Russia? I bought one from Neil’s Yard instead that said made in England, much more expensive but I don’t care. Thing is though as Badpuss has highlighted maybe not all ingredients are sourced in the U.K. It’s the drugs that worry me. My OH and daughter both have repeat prescriptions but you can’t stockpile them as the GP won’t prescribe anymore.
