Does anyone have any knowledge regarding pruning or cutting back a clematis? I grew my first ever one this year and trained it up a redundant bird table, stunning it was, now it looks dead. Research on the internet hasn't been helpful - some saying cut it right down, some saying not to. It's clematis Blue Angel if that helps.
I've had clematis and there are different types requiring different pruning so stand back from those secateurs till you know what you're doing. I researched one of mine, cut it back and almost killed it. Only one piece of it produced shoots the following year. This year it has died back several times and each time I have cut out the dead and it send new shoots but it is still nothing like it was and OH wants me to replace it. I don't think I planted it deep enough and they like their roots covered with stone/slate or something to keep them from getting too hot.
Ella, it still has green leaves on top but appears dead & woody lower down, its grown in a pot. Thanks for all your help and suggestions, I think I'll leave it til spring and maybe re pot in a bigger pot & have a bit of a trim then. Thanks once again for your help 😊
