I have a problem with a butter mark on one of hubs shirts. I have tried washing up liquid, but the mark is still there. It's more noticeable as it's a plain dark coloured shirt. It's heading towards the bin as we speak!

Just read that dishwashing detergent may help - worth a try?

Annoying! I would have suggested washing up liquid if you hadn't already used it. I soaked something light in Fairy once but then the top turned a light shade of green! That went in the bin!
I have another washing problem. My OD has given me her black courdrouy dress which went into the washer with a tissue in the pocket. She says she rewashed it but it is still covered in the stuff. Any suggestions what to do?

Trisha - Aerial and Vanish do stain remover sprays, also a few more washes might help, and drying outside in the sun helps to magically make stains disappear.
LL - wash the dress again and dry outside, the breeze may remove the tissue, whilst the garment is still damp, tumble dry, and try the sticky rollers, which I use to remove dog hairs.

I sorted that once a few years back by rubbing in a car mechanics degreasing cleaner before washing.
I forget what it was called but is was bright green.
I just looked it up, it is called swarfega.

Rewashing didn't help much so I soaked the dress in a sink of cold water with several aspirin dissolved into it. Saw this tip somewhere on the web where it stated the aspirin dissolves paper. And it did! Dress now returned to happy daughter.

Stain now gone, hooray. I found some biotex, I left the shirt soaking for 24 hours. The next step was going to be industrial degreaser. Thank you all for your comments. LL, I have stored the tip about aspirin in my memory bank. I'm sure to need it at some point.

i'll have to remember that tip about aspirin too. Do you know that washing machines have a magic ability to turn socks into paper hankies.

Interestingly, aspirin is salacylic acid.

Not to be pedantic here but Salacylic acid is a precursor to aspirin. It's actually acetyl salacylate. I'm showing off here. Every year the students used to do a long project making aspirin from oil of wintergreen. I've made the stuff about 10 times. It was a real pain. All I really remember is tons of washing up and a stinky smell.
