I mentioned on another thread that we had a duck sitting on a nest of eggs right by our back door. The same thing happened last year so we assume it’s the same duck. I learnt something this year which like me, most people don’t know. Ducks make a nest then lay one egg everyday. Our duck had laid 14 and then we went away for a weekend so not sure if she laid more. Once the duck has finished laying it is only then that she starts to sit on them. Previously she laid her egg about 7.30 in the morning then fly off back to her mate, presumably on the river near us. When we returned from our Easter weekend with the kids she was sitting on the nest and has done so for 3 weeks. She goes off morning and evening for about half an hour to feed and I managed to catch her turning her eggs before covering the eggs with feathers she had plucked from herself. Yesterday morning she was missing from the nest. The eggs are fully exposed, no feathers covering them. She has not returned and we are assuming the worst that a Fox has taken her or scared her off. What a shame that she was only another week off seeing her ducklings hatch. We will leave the nest to see what happens but I’m not optimistic. My OH has read in the paper this morning that there is a duck sitting on a nest at Number 10! Hope she has more luck!
Oh that's such a shame. There was a duck with 9 ducklings in our stream mid week. Then saw her yesterday and she's down to 6. I think with the owls and cats around she will be lucky to have 2 survive. Last night the Tawny Owl was in our garden and the little garden birds were making a hell of a racket, and actually chased him off! I bet he is taking their young. I know it's the way of nature but hate the thought of the little ones losing their life before it's begun.
