I am working my way round all the borders on the back garden, everything has been neglected for a while. I have vegetable plants and seeds ordered. Planters have all been emptied in readiness. Has anyone got a vegtrug? They seem a bit expensive, but they look ideal.

I don't have one Trisha, but reading your post and VWs about planting, has really inspired me to get growing, even if I have to use big pots and grow bags. My borders are crammed with non productive plants and the centre is grassed, the rest paved, so no room for a veg patch. I'll have to get creative.

Oh wow, I love that Trisha! I thought you meant one of those wooden basket style things with a handle. I like that. I wonder if my OH has enough scrap wood in the shed to faddle one together . We have a problem with slugs Trisha, what do you do to deter them?

OH built a u-shaped raised planter for my veg - it is ideal, as you can reach all round it without stretching - it's future proof!

Sprinkle eggshells all around the base of plants - that helps deter them. Also if you put a piece of board down in the evening, they will gather under it at night. You can then lift it off and get rid of them. Or even lay a beer trap - sink a jamjar with beer in into the soil- they will go after the beer and fall in.

You sound like a really well educated gardener VW. I love your veg section. We bought my MIL a veg trug Trisha a few years back for her and it has been a great success due to its height. I was thinking that we could use all sorts of containers for seeds, the milk containers and the veg containers that things have come in I have kept and thought I could use for something ?
The milk ones, I wondered if I put holes in the sides and planted trailing plants if they would achieve the same effect as those you buy ? Will they work ?

That is so professional VW. He is a very clever chap! Nice looking trug, Trisha and can see that it would be very useful and easy to look after. I’ve been in our garden for the last 2 afternoons tidying up mainly and loved doing it. About 4pm yesterday my OH made us a coffee so we sat down for a break in the sunshine. Suddenly the noise of a tractor was upon us and there was the farmer in his field muck spreading with chicken manure!!!! Pooh, it smelt horrid. I grabbed all the washing off the line and took it indoors. Had a good laugh about it as it would definitely keep some people indoors and isolating! Looks like the last sunny day here for a while so I’ll be out again later. Today’s job is to weed the herb patch and clean the greenhouse.

Chicken poo is rank - I hate it - don't mind cow manure though lol. Farmer just up the road has applied for planning for an enormous chicken farm - as you can imagine we have all objected lol

I’m so impressed. It’s all I can do to keep weeds at bay.
Unfortunately we live next to a railway embankment and occasionally I’ve seen a rat wandering through our garden. I have an empty flower bed and I was thinking of planting some veg in there but I’d be very dubious about eating anything rats have been near. They carry some very nasty diseases.
I am thinking though about not cutting all the bramble bushes and in the autumn I could get jam. I’m still concerned about rats though. I’d have to be very careful.
We have clay soil which is very hard to deal with. Our garden is either a bog or rock solid.
Keep up your good work. It must be great eating your own freshly picked veg.

Maggzz, I once read that we are never far away from rats. I find that growing vegetables in containers works really well, so long as you don't forget to water them. I have three water butts that have been keeping me going (we have a water meter). Unfortunately they are all empty now. I think that we may have rain later the week, let's hope it falls at night. I also have strawberries in a hanging basket. You still have time for a trial.

Magggzz - there is a dingle at the bottom of our garden, and rats live in the banks of the brook. Occasionally I may see one down there, but I don't put bird feed in back garden so as not to encourage them - they don't venture to the front where the birds get spoiled thankfully. Rain today is welcome as garden desperately needed it. Veg growing lovely - can't wait to be able to pick pears off the tree for the first time since I planted it
