I read somewhere that should of, would of and could of are now accepted as correct. This horrifies me. I have a young cousin who I text message with who uses those. To me it looks uneducated but she is a very highly qualified mathematician.
I was once with a teacher friend who was marking exam papers. She told me that bad spelling was allowed but I saw one student who had spelled photosynthesis using about six letters, none of which were correct. She had to accept it though because it was just about recognisable. The rest of the paper wasn’t much better. While i do agree that spelling is not as important for science subjects surely there should be a limit.
It makes me wonder how important examiners consider spelling in subjects like English and the humanities.
I would say I’m quite a good speller..just don’t ask me anything about punctuation!! It’s more a case of looking at a word and recognising that it doesn’t look right then just trying again till it looks right to me.
