We’ve been watching this over the last few days after hearing friends say it was very good. I did enjoy it but left me questioning what was going on at certain points in it. Have you seen it? What did you think?

Great, thanks Jax. When Beth’s mum drove to a house with a family before driving off to you know where - won’t say in case others haven’t seen it and might- do you reckon that man was Beth’s father? And if so why would he not want anything to do with his daughter? What happened between Beth’s Mum and the man (pen pal) in Mexico? If he left on business why did it come over that the relationship was finished? And why was Mr Wheatley so horrible to her? Actually think I know why but it was over the top!

Hi LL
I think that was Beth's dad, but he had a wife & child already who didn't know he had been having a dalliance with Beth's mum and he didn't acknowledge her because of that - she was his guilty secret.
Alma's pen-pal from Mexico appeared to tire of her once he'd had a week of fun with her, don't think there was really going to be any kind of future for them.
I think Alma wanted to adopt because she couldn't have kids herself, the relationship between her and her husband was already awful and I think he agreed because he thought it would shut her up and give him an easier life. I felt there was a hint of him being a bit menacing in an inappropriate way with Beth, but generally he just wasn't interested in her or his wife and his job gave him the opportunity to be away from them for long periods of time (which probably contributed to her alcoholism and that became a downward spiral). He was generally a nasty bloke - which was demonstrated by the way he behaved about giving the house to Beth then taking it back.
Hope that helps.

If you enjoyed the Netflix series of the Q G, try reading the book, written by Walter Tevis in the 80s......it is brilliant and clearer than the series. It was available on Kindle for download at 99p a few weeks ago.
Often I am disappointed when a book I have really enjoyed gets made into a film or series, but I thought the Netflix series was very good and Anna Taylor-Joy who played Beth was excellent.

I agree with that. When the Harry Potter films came out, there was a lot of negativity from many as there was way more detail in the books, and that was true, I read them all and watched every film. Problem was that the books were very long so impossible to cram everything into one film per book, the film would have been so long. But, I loved the books and I loved the films too anyway.
I still haven't seem QG but am very intrigued now you have given the storyline, while trying to help LL.
Those kindle books are a steal aren't they Cj

Don't worry Bellatrix, not much given away, most of that information is incidental to the main story

Thanks Jax. Also wondered about the headmistress when Beth went back to school. Understood why she was walking with a stick but not why she didn’t speak/recognise Beth, seemed like she had brain damage. Did she fall and bump her head?

I have often felt like you Cj. The book was great but the film version not so. Not sure I could read QG now I’ve seen the series 😥
