We have been living here for about 6 weeks now and considering we are in the town it is relatively quiet. Our neighbours have not been here in all that time. Apparently they don't stay here very much.
We didn't realise how thin the party wall was until they came home last weekend. They have a couple of dogs and must arrived home, put the dogs in the house and gone straight out. I didn't know they were back until I heard the most awful whining. First I thought a dog had got in my house, then checked the garden, then outside the front, thinking maybe someone had left a dog outside but no. It took a while to realise it was coming from next door. I then realised how thin the wall was!
This dog was wailing and whining for 3 hours and his doggy chum had started barking in between his wailing, it was so loud! My brother said I was making a big deal and it was purely because I was used to living in the quiet countryside. I had to remind him that we used to live in a semi-detached cottage and our neighbours there had a large dog that barked and we could only hear a very muffled sound, and this was quite different!
We introduced ourselves to our neighbours and they are nice people, they confirmed the party wall was very thin. They are not there often so it doesn't have to be a big deal, as they only stay for a couple of days at a time. But it would be a problem if they sold and new people were there permanently.
Have been looking into solutions to soundproof our party wall. It is a big wall in the hallway 30ft long and about 10ft high and again upstairs on the landing. There is a product called soundbloc which can be put to the wall but with the amount of wall there is, It will cost a fortune!
Question is, can anyone think of another solution... does papering help or paneling etc., and also............
Can you hear YOUR neighbours?
