Last Friday night I made a Christmas cake. We have a lovely vintage tea room, think loose leaf tea, tea pots and China cups and saucers. The couple who run it organize different events including afternoon tea, birthday parties, carol singing etc throughout the year. Friday evening was a special. Everything was provided, all the ingredients and equipment for a charge. You bake the cake in your own oven. Another date has been arranged for the decorations. It was a lovely, easy way to spend a couple of hours on a Friday evening.

What a lovely idea Trisha, I have been thinking about making a cake this year, I haven't made one in quite a while, I usually buy one and marzipan and ice it, but last year it had a distinctive 'fake' alcohol taste which I didn't like at all.

That really sounds like one to me.

I made a cake last Christmas and the last slice was eaten in August. No one but me ate any so I won’t be making one this year sadly. I enjoy making a cake using my great aunt’s recipe (she died in 1964 so it’s vintage) Seems sad that the family tradition is coming to an end.

No-one ate it? You must live in a bubble. Doesn't everyone love xmas cake? My daughter, who spends xmas with us, makes ours, and she has to make another for her husband as he "wants his fair share"

It’s a bit odd because unless you have booked then no point in turning up as there are never any spare scones!!! I like the sound of your cake baking afternoon.

That's a brilliant idea Trisha! I'd love to do that!

Trisha what great fun! My cake is in the oven as we speak, 4-5 hours! It smells glorious though. I’m trying a Mary Berry recipe this year. I’m trying to find one that doesn’t crumble when it’s sliced. Does anyone have this with fruit cake or is it just me?

The one I make doesn't seem to crumble Beckyboo. My Phil and Kirstie one is drenched in cider. It's not "their" recipe, it was one of the guests on the Christmas show and was able to download it from Chanel 4 website. Does it make a difference if you cook on gas or electric, just asking, have no idea. I put a dollop of black treacle in mine, maybe that makes it more moist rather than crumbly?

I read yesterday that it has something to do with the ratio of sugar to gluten - this one has got Captain Morgan Spiced Rum in it, smells awesome. Cooked on a low heat 140c for 5 hours so we will see. I’ve made Delia before and BBC Good Food and my mum’s 1950’s Good Housekeeping’s recipe. I like trying different ones so I’ll look up yours for next year 😊

I decorated my cake just before Christmas. Marzipan, icing and icing decorations. Our granddaughter finished it off with a robin, Christmas tree and about 6 santas. All old decorations from past years. I would post a photo, but I'm not having any luck. ( My excuse anyway)

My daughter is very thoughtful. She always makes ours, and never uses icing, as I don't like it. The cake is decorated with marzipan, and this year had a marzipan gingerbread man on top.
