My mum gave us Heinz tomato soup which I loved. I would rip up a slice of white bread and put all the bits in the bowl. This being a bit like adding croutons 😂. My mother in law ruined Heinz tomato soup by always adding a load of milk to make it go further. Put me right off it! What foods did you eat and love or eat and hate when you were young? I also remember Kunzle cakes which were a big treat on a Friday.

Fruit pudding made from suet, and called white pudding in scotland. You never find it in england. It was grilled or fried, and you had it with egg and bacon.

Mum used to make a great lamb stew from cheaper cuts, slow cooked till meat so tender it fell apart - as a child I loved pouring brown sauce over it! Also a firm favourite from school days was a cake/treat made at a local bakery - that school children fondly named s*** cakes - they did resemble a blob of something lol - actually made from crushed cornflakes, syrup and chocolate - delicious!!

I remember floating bread in my tomato soup too and the cornflake cakes
My mum was a great cook and we had wonderful food at the weekends. In the week we had to come in from school and help ourselves to some stew from the slowcooker (winter time) as mum worked. But one of the convenience foods I remember really loving was Heinz spaghetti bolognaise in a tin. When I was at high school I would buy a tin at lunch break and take it home for lunch. Loved that stuff, never had it since though. Wonder if it would have the same effect.

As a kid I loved Fern cakes. You can't buy them anymore somehow.

I don’t remember fern cakes! Cornflake cakes were always served at parties like rice crispie cakes. I’ve never managed to make my own as they always just fall apart!

Ah - these cornflake cakes were shaped into a ball, and pretty solid, not the ones you are used to seeing with whole cornflakes. They took some eating but were delicious - I am desperately trying to get hold of the recipe for them. I've not heard of fern cakes either....

We always had Kunzle cakes when I was little, loved tinned spaghetti on toast, home grown tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce, didn't like brussels sprouts back then, home grown peaches, delicious apples from Miss Hawkins tree, our neighbour opposite, doughnuts from our Jewish neighbours and 'wagon wheels' they were the size of real life wagon wheels all those years ago
