So I was chatting with a friend about a book club she goes to and thought I’d do a search on book clubs in my area. I came across a site called meetup and was pleasantly surprised at just how many different events and groups there are in my area! Book clubs, badminton walking, social, park tennis, coding? Breakfast and lunch clubs, theatre visits the list is endless! How great is it that if one has time and inclination we can find so many opportunities to get out there and meet new people, try new things!
I am registered on that, and it seems very good, but nothing at all in my area - the nearest events are over into Shropshire, and mainly on weekdays. Not that I'm wishing my life away, but am really looking forward to retirement and time to go do things in the week lol
Thanks for giving the website details Beckyboo, I hadn't heard of it before but it's definitely worth exploring. So this is your last year of work is it? I am sure you will be greatly missed by the kids you look after, but it'll be fun planning what to do when your time is your own
Yes my last year of working as a childminder, I gave the parents lots of notice mainly so I couldn’t change my mind 😄 we’ve always had plans to travel for a month or so in New Zealand so we’re going a few months after the retirement. I may well take on a part time job when we get back but if I don’t, I know I’ll have plenty to keep me busy for a couple of years refurbishing the house after years of small people running around in it.
Funnily enough, I only work two days a week, Tuesday and Wednesday. But every single local class is on those two days. I am not kidding, Tai, Chi,Art, Pottery, sculpting, dancing, the lot.
I just don't believe it...
It's always the way. Our college also used to do a lot of great evening courses. Enjoyed those. Now the few I fancy are in Brecon which is over 2 hours away and not a drive for the faint hearted, especially in winter which is when most of them run.
Meetup looks good. Like 6herry we don't have anything close. Beckyboo, it's sounds like you have exciting times ahead. It will be amazing to travel and not have to worry about time restraints. It won't take long to get your home in order. You have given everyone enough time to make other arrangements, you may even find that all the children are sorted before school starts back in September. Get another job???
Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly.
Yes it all sounds super exciting Beckyboo. New Zealand is just beautiful. One of my granddads lived there for over 25 years! Saw Ben Fogle on tv this week staying with people who have moved there, being self sufficient living in yurts, I was so envious!
I have a close friend going through divorce at the moment. It's difficult as I think she's finding it difficult to go out weekends as all her friends are married. She works in the week, so it's just weekends which she finds really lonely. I was reading a piece in the guardian about so many working people struggling with after work loneliness and having no one to share their free time with. I will suggest Meetup to her to have a look at
My friends, as I have discovered myself, there are no disasters, only opportunities. And, indeed, opportunities for fresh disasters.
