I’ve been making gtc today and it tastes too vinegary. It’s also a bit too runny so I’ve added more cooking apples to help thicken it up. Having googled, people say it changes taste over time and not to be put off by the vinegar taste. Has anyone here made it before or any chutney and had a similar experience? I bought lots of lovely small jam jars and was going to give it away but would hate anyone to have a jar and think it was a terrible gift!

We made some the week before last. It's meant to improve with time, but I quite like it now with some cheese & crackers. If you put the cellophane lids on, it can evaporate a bit over time and become less runny. Don't give up on it yet.

Thanks Jax. I’ve bottled it up after letting it simmer away for a bit longer to get rid of some fluid. Will see how it tastes in a few weeks. Fingers crosssed.

I used to make green tomato chutney. We never ate much of it though. LL, if you leave it for around six weeks, that gives the chutney time to mature and mellow. The vinegar smell won't be so prominent.

To be honest, the best thing to come out of the Covid crisis was our tomato growing experience .... on a walk round the neighbourhood (doing my daily 1 hr exercise during lockdown) there were a couple of houses who put spare tomato plants on their front gardens with a sign saying 'help yourself' - so I did, got 4 plants and they have absolutely thrived. We tended them carefully, fed & watered them and they rewarded us with a fantastic crop of tasty tomatoes . Was sad when they got to the end, but have several jars of chutney to remember them by

OH and I are going to make Autumn tomato chutney this weekend, a recipe he got from "ggod food" site.
Last night we made onion chutney, we are thrilled, it's delicious. It'll go in the hampers
