I thought I could tell a scam at the first few seconds but this one had me for longer than I felt comfortable..this is how it went:
One of my kids messaged me on Whatsap.........
Child: Hi Mum, just got a new Smartphone, this is now my new number you can delete my old number
Me: Which child of mine is this? is it my favourite one? (this is a running joke between us all, I tell them all they are my favourite, they all know I do this)
Child: Yes Mom (I picked up that it now says mom instead of mum, but thought it may be whatsap changing your type, as it does sometimes, but was more focused on figuring out which of my kids it was and wishing I had just asked in the first place)
Child: what have you been up to today?
Me: I've been painting out a cupboard and been into town, just got back.
Child: How did that go?
Me: fine, looks good...Are you not at work today?
Child: No, I've got the day off, been trying to sort out this new phone, been a nightmare, taking me ages.
Me: Ok, well have a nice day off ( I am still kicking myself because I'm not sure which of my kids I'm talking to, as they all work and have all taken a day off from time to time and don't want to look silly at this point by asking)
Child: Are you busy at the moment?
Me: no, why?
Child: I've got a bit of a problem, wondering if you can help me.
Me: I'll try, whats up? (Aha, now I'll realise which one it is)
Child: Because of this new phone, I've had a security alert on my bank account for 48 hours, so now can't access my account. I need to by stuff for work today. If you can lend me the money for 48 hours, ill pay you back from my savings, immediately its sorted.(got a funny feeling at this point, as none of my kids would have to buy their own work equipment)
Me: Yeh sure, how much do you need, but how am I going to give you the money if your account is frozen?
Child:£853.51, you can pay it direct to the company and pay the bill for me: Compny name, sort code, account etc. If you can do this now, I'll check with them in 5 minutes and see if it's done, then theyll send my work stuff.
Me: Ok, ill sort it. (at this point, I messaged all my kids and asked if any of them had just changed their number on a new phone. They all said NO!)
Child: Did it work for me Mom?
Me: No sorry, it didn't work for you as none of my kids call me mom, buy their own work stuff or have changed their phones.
The account details and company name were immediately deleted, so I can't pass that on to any authorities but if it wasn't for the small anomalies in that conversation, I could have been had.
