Have you been following the news about this? The members of the group have been holding up traffic on various roads and caused quite a bit of annoyance and inconvenience to many people. I have been looking at their website to see what it’s all about. How many people on here don’t have roof insulation? I thought it was something every building had because it saved us money on heating bills and keeps us warmer. But apparently not. They are demanded that the government put insulation into all social housing I wish they could extend their requests to include all houses should have double glazing! We live in a Grade 2 house, back in the 60s, someone thought we had an interesting front door, and because of this we can’t have double glazing! How much heat goes out of our windows?! Is there anything you need to be them to get for you?
Have you any thoughts on how you personally can help with climate change?
I have LL. I understand their point but worry about the situations they are causing to people going about their business. People on their way to hospitals have been held up, it was said someone was trying to get a relative to hospital quickly as they were having a stroke, being held up meant they suffered more detrimental effects than had they got there sooner. Been a few of these stories. If it was any of their relatives..how would they feel, theres more ways to make a point. I wasn't aware that so many houses were still not insulated. There were many government grants years ago for this wasn't there?
For sure we can all do something, but each one of us would have to be really conscious for it to make a big enough difference. The big industries could make the most impact, but that means more countries making a huge effort regarding their own industries. On the radio someone was saying there were no asthma related child deaths during lockdown, since everything restarted there has been 24.
Lockdown prooved a point of how things could be all over the world by changing. Is this right...by 2025 there will be no more new fossil fuel cars being made/sold, it will all be electric new cars, if this is going to help the air, then great but everyone who can't afford one of these new cars will still ride around in an old petrol/diesel car. The electric cars are so much money
There is a lot to be said for being part of a group, and the support and friendship that is gained from this.
I do not approve of their methods and think it's a shame that they have chosen causing dangerous and disruptive traffic problems as their way of highlighting an issue which I think most people would broadly agree with, but I am pretty shocked that they have been arrested then released and go back to do it all over again. I accept that without the suffragettes throwing themselves in front of the King's horse, we may not have got Votes for Women, however I don't think Insulate Britain's tactics will hasten getting improved insulation in our housing stock and is more likely to create a backlash against it. We have loft insulation but it's not great and could do with replacing but as much of our loft has been boarded this is apparently not an easy job to do. I think there should be schemes to help people to heat their homes more effectively and save money (this could include solar panels etc) the environmental & financial benefits would be great but gluing yourself to the motorway just isn't the way to go about encouraging Government policy to make this possible.
I’ve just said on another thread that my cousin in Scotland who is 78 and her husband are getting a new boiler and central heating system plus underfloor insulation and 2 new doors all free through something called Scotland warmer homes. She was pricing new boilers when her son said he’d seen something about this. She applied a few weeks ago and they’re fitting it all now.
We can't get help either. We live in a Victorian terrace house, the walls are only two bricks thick so no cavity to put insulation between. We do have roof insulation and double glazing but with the walls being so thin each time we have the central heating on the heat has all gone, it doesn't 'stay'. Also with not having the wood burner at the moment it's colder and they can't fit the new wood burner until 24th Jan next year as they are so booked up with people wanting wood burners fitted for Christmas.
That article is well worth a read Bella, thankyou.
Apparently 32 of the insulate activists have been arrested for breaching the court injunction, they each face up to 2 years in prison. So far they have caused 7 weeks of chaos, to my mind their actions are attention seeking and moronic, they have not has any positive publicity or effect at all for the supposed 'cause' , and as for those nutters who glued their own faces to the road, that's outrageous...to think that some of these people may well be parents
Re your windows LL, we have the same problem with ours. We have sealed the bottom sash windows to stop the draughts, they cannot be opened. The top half of the window is left unsealed for fresh air and ventilation. It has made a massive difference. On some windows, hall and landing, we had the full window sealed. The listed buildings inspector has seen them and was happy with that.
It is right the big corporations should putting up the billions needed to halt climate change, they are the main cause in the first place, these big multi nationals produce just about everything we buy, use and throw away, they have bases and head quarters in more than one country. As China and Indonesia labour is so cheap, they base their big production plants there, where, interestingly enough, these countries environmental policies are very flexible and easily bypassed .
Many of these Multi National corporations are also dishonest in the reporting of the greenhouse emissions they produce. These companies set their own targets, but many of these targets do not include the emissions associated with the entire 'life' of their products. When a company makes a product that product requires raw materials that create their own emissions during harvest, extraction, refining, etc. and when a consumer uses that product, there are further emissions that come from the product’s use and eventual disposal.
They claim to be global environmental leaders, but they have a lot of work to do to address their full climate impact. Government and individual actions are vital, however small and futile they seem to us on a daily, personal level, but corporations, with their political influence and power in today’s world, have an even larger role to play. They are able to influence policy changes, influence consumer preference, they need to start taking full responsibility....the ratbags!!
