I have had my eyes opened today with this topic. I am busy de-cluttering as I keep harping on about and had 20 thin Ikea blankets from my daughters wedding that I wanted to give directly to the homeless in our local town. I didn't want to take them to a charity shop as the homeless don't benefit.
I went on Google maps and counted 20 ! Charity Shops but couldn't find anything on homeless shelters. I was told that the local taxi company was a drop off point for the homeless, but when I got there, only to be told it was Christmas boxes only.
I ended up going to the town information center who phoned several charity places, all to no avail due to Covid they didn't take anything !
I was advised by the helpful ladies there to try a community cafe called Yellow&Blue. So I trundled there and chatted to the woman in charge explaining the problem I was having to get these to the people who needed them.
A man came over and basically said he had overheard the conversation and that he ran an evening once a week for the homeless to have a coffee and shelter for a few hours. He was actually a truck driver who had been doing this in his spare time for the last 5 years.
He said the local councils were useless! They didn't want to go that extra mile to help. Infact, no one had a good word to say about them and re-iterated that the homeless were out on their own.
The truck driver had taken a day off to help 2 people, one to get into re-hab and another to help get him re-housed, a step up from where he was.
He was at the cafe every Wednesday evening and I said I would definitely drop off more things to him.
I was quite humbled
