I’m redecorating my lounge. Naturally this has to be done on a budget so I’m going to be using a lot of paint. It’s quite a big room with a dado rail which I’d love to get rid of but I’m going to have to put up with. It would just be too big a job to get rid of it. I’m going to have to have carpet as I don’t want laminate flooring and although the floorboards are lovely they don’t go all the way across the room. The bit near the fireplace has a concrete floor.

I have two nice cabinets and a bookcase which were a lovely pine 30 years ago when we got them but now they’re very orange. I want to paint them. I also have a very sturdy pine coffee table. It’s taken a hammering over the years but I doubt if I could find anything of the same quality to replace it.

The wallpaper is a rose colour which I’ve never liked but it’s flat so it’ll take paint.

The room has a patio door. It’s an older aluminium one but I’m not planning to stay in this house long term so I don’t think it’s worth replacing.

I have an old but very comfortable 3 piece suite in there. I’m going to get rid of one of the chairs for definite but I looked at some newer but affordable ones and they felt cardboardy and cheap so I thought I’d make do with new throws and cushions.

This room gets a lot of light so I don’t really want white except on the woodwork and fire surround.

I’m clueless about colours. I don’t want blue as it seems to turn up everywhere and I’m not keen on tans or warm colours although I could be convinced. I quite fancy purple or green but I have to be fairly neutral if I’m going to sometime sell the house.

Please help me with suggestions.

If you are planning on a move, then I wouldn't go for Purple. A moss or darker greens are very alluring to many buyers at the moment, but not on all the walls. I know you said not white because the room is bright anyway, but there are many off whites which give a lovely feel without being too glaring. So how do you feel about an off white and a deep shade of one of the greens on the fireplace wall? The painted furniture sounds a nice fresh idea.

I know you said you didn't want laminate, I never wanted laminate either but when we moved here the carpets (all) were horrendous, patterned but smelly too. We found a cheap laminate from Wickes but it actually looked like engineered wood because it was matt and had a grain and it worked out way cheaper than buying replacement carpet anyway. It was on sale at the time and was really thrifty. I am now very happy we had it, mostly because the house doesn't get so hot in the summer with those types of flooring.

As for the patio doors.. you can buy aluminium paint in white if you wanted to freshen them up

But what's your style Maggzz? what kind of look do you like? any particular era? Pinterest has so many ideas for different styles. Mostly neutral colours are a safe bet if you're thinking of moving with a statement light shade, a nice rug and some plants

There is a lot to be said for being part of a group, and the support and friendship that is gained from this.

Because of the dado rails the room is obviously divided into above and below. I’m not sure about painting one wall completely green although I like the idea because it would have a big white stripe across the middle. I have laminate in all the other downstairs rooms. I’m not that fond of it. I feel it makes the rooms cold. I really thought carpet was my only option in there. Maybe if I got a rug to put on top of it that would work. We have a good quality laminate in the hall and kitchen and a darker one in the front room as it matched the fitted shelves in there. I’m not sure that yet another one would work.

I like the idea of painting the aluminium doors. I didn’t think that was an option so I’ll look into that.

I know you’ve painted furniture. What colour did you use? I was going to go for an antique white but when I look at it it just seems like a pale brown.

Warm rugs, fluffy cushions etc.

We decorated our tv room last year. Green is the main colour. I could let you know the paint colours if you like. You can go to B&Q and get paint made up the same as expensive paints. You just take a copy of the shade.
My decorator told me to use some paint on furniture called Z…. ?? Forgotten, hold on, I’m off to check and will be back.

Black goes well against Moss green and off white walls, would look nice. I wouldn't choose grey as it's been so overdone, sorry about my thought on that. But white wood looks fresh too. I have recently painted my bathroom ceiling moss green with white walls, the shower rail is brass, and looks amazing against the green (It's not actually brass, I bought a cheap white one and spray painted it brass, but it's very effective and cost peanuts)

I have a huge rug over my laminate in the lounge Magggzz and that's what I like about this flooring, you can change up the look by moving rugs around. I have a large very colourful Kilim rug that I use, but in the winter I put my large Jute one down. You can't do that with fitted carpet, you're so stuck with it for a while.

If you paint most walls with a light colour and paint the dado the same colour, they won't stand out

You’ve all given me a lot to think about. Thanks for all your suggestions. I’m definitely leaning now towards a moss green below the dado and a lighter version of the same shade above it.

I think now a very pale grey for the units or maybe a matte white.

Im debating about carpet v laminate now.

Any more suggestions would be very welcome.

Might be worth considering. I too can while away hours looking at Pinterest

I have used Zin Bin on furniture Magggzzz as CC has mentioned. It is a primer that sticks to pretty much any surface and then you paint over with main colour.

So saying though with furniture I tend to give a gentle sand then use an undercoat and I use Acrylic eggshell. It is easier to work with than gloss and the brushes and rollers wash with soapy water. I use a small roller, it doesn't show brush strokes and I like to have the job done before I've really started...

Agree with B on the dado rail. Paint it the same as the walls and it won't stand out the same.

Johnstones have quite a good colour selection at a really good price too.

Sounds to be a very therapeutic project. Hope you're not starting until this heat disappears!
