We may have set up our own country on July 4th 1776 but TBH we never really left Britain and Britain never left the USA .So all of you over in the UK should celebrate today too
The new USA kept English as the official language , some patriots way back then wanted to make German the official language . Sticking with English created an eternal bond between the 2 countries where we can communicate but also enjoy each other's culture , learn about goings on easily
There is a whole cult of Britain in the USA . Mostly among the middle class and above but it can get down to the grass roots level* . People love the royal family , at times since it is such a soap opera but beyond that they are impressed with royalty . British literature is taught in colleges , movies too not the Carry On films ( they pop up on TCM) but serious ones like LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER . High class British TV is a a huge part of the USA's non profit PBS network , every Sunday nite people are glued to the TV's watching shows like DOWNTON ABBEY , THE FORSYTHE SAGA , PRIDE & PREJUDICE . Me too, loved FOYLES WAR & ZEN .
British people are assumed to be very smart .Many will add 50 IQ points to someone with a British accent . THE FINANCIAL TIMES & ECONOMIST magazine are read by the rich & powerful . Have long half joked that someday I am going to walk into a meeting with higher ranking suits with an ECONOMIST magazine in my hands and see if that gets me attention which I'm sure it wud. Barbour coats were getting more & more popular when I left .
The mini Cooper car is a favorite of the more well off & more educated . I saw many with British flags on the roof . A professor of media studies I knew insisted THE BEATLES , ROLLING STONES saved rock music from extinction .At the mail box store by my place in Louisville the owner a retired professor always had BBC radio on .
Not as serious /important but fun . I know the mini skirt came from London and daring to do so at 43 wore one this week. A 29 year old co-worker followed my lead , looking much better . Long live Mary Quant ! A friend of mine had an aunt pushing into her 7's who was convinced someday she wud marry Paul McCartney .
So go out and celebrate your country's status in the USA !
And thanks for all the good stuff
* Downton Abbey appealed to more then UMC white people, a black maid at the hotel where I worked loved it .
