Vegetable oils – A quote from the book “The Big Fat Surprise” written by Nina Teicholz there is a quote from Gerald McNeill, vice president of Loders Croklaan, which is one of the country's largest suppliers of edible oil said – see Page 277. ..
“As these oils are heated, you're creating toxic oxidative breakdown products, one of these products is a compound called an Aldehyde, which interferes with DNA. Another is Formaldehyde which is extremely toxic”.
See, you don't know what's in your food these days !
Thats very true Linda - I think we should go back to the good old days of lard, and butter. My mum grew up on copious quantities of it, and at 86 and fit as a fiddle, it doesn't look to have done her much harm.
I don't think we have any idea how much rubbish goes into many processed foods. There's something to be said for more natural foodstuffs.
I gave up the vegetable oil a few months ago and switched to butter and olive oil. Do you fry with olive oil, guys? I have used it a couple of times and the food tastes great. I've read a lot of different opinions on cooking with it, some say it's bad to heat it, some say it's no problem. What are your thoughts?
I pretty much dry fry everything these days. Sometimes add a splash of Sesame oil for stirfrys. Stopped using Vegetable and Sunflower Oil a while back. The only time I need oil is in breadmaker and I use Olive oil with great results.
I only ever use olive oil or coconut oil. I've been traumatised growing up with my mother who used cheap vegetable oil and deep fried everything (typical Scottish diet). She used the same oil over and over, never throwing it out, just adding to it when it got low. Goodness knows the amount of toxins in it. She still does it despite us telling her it can't be good. Maybe I'm overreacting to it but that can't be healthy surely?? Who knows. Dietary advice changes so regularly perhaps she was right and I'm wrong. Im not convinced anyone knows what is best for us.
