When I was sitting in the garden one evening during the last heat wave in June, two hedgehogs were eating fallen apples, I thought I should put a drink out for them, as I have found them drowned in our pond before now. So if you can do this too, I use a large shallow plant saucer, it will help our wildlife to survive, I am amazed how many birds use it to bathe and drink from, also bees and insects need a drink as well

I have been watching the birds bathing and drinking in our garden pond which has a circulating stream through the rockery Jazzy. I have also frightened off a heron for the last 2 days and think he has had a nice feast on our goldfish!

Your birds sound like they are pampered LL, compared to my plastic saucer, it is nice to see them enjoying the water though, Herons are so good at fishing, a lot of our fish disappear that way, good thing we have plenty of baby fish to replace the ones taken.

Good for you making the effort. We had to net our pond off from our heron, he was killing our Koi!!

That's lovely Jazzy and really thoughtful. There is a small park to walk through on the way to the store where I live. I saw a lady putting down plastic bowls filled with water for the birds

That's such a good idea, Jazzy. Even though the hot spell has passed here, temperatures are due to rise again in the next day or two so I will take your advice. We live on the side of a hill and I miss not having a pond here but perhaps I can make something smaller. Hmmmm... you've got me thinking! x

Hi Blueskies ~ I think a pond, however small, is a good thing for the garden, ours is large with many fish, the frog, toad and newt spawn gets eaten by them, so this summer we are making a small separate pond for wildlife, near the big pond so they can hop across easily

That sounds so lovely, Jazzy, and I completely agree with you. Of course the frogs and toads keep down the slugs too, which would be handy here! At my last house, I had a huge pond and really enjoyed all the wildlife it brought. You have inspired me and I'm going to investigate a small one here. Our garden here is all on different levels and sloping but I'm sure I can put a little something somewhere

I am sure that you will be pleased with your pond Blueskies, I am really looking forward to my new one, choosing some pretty plants and waiting for the wildlife to arrive

I have often thought of it for our garden but it seems to be one of those things that I never get round to. Funnily I was clearing away cardboard that I had gathered as there wasn't room for it in our recycling bin and found a toad hiding in it! I wondered why it was there. We live in a wood, our nearest loch is half a mile away. A bit far for it to have travelled! But it seemed healthy and happy. I left it there. A pond is definitely on my 'to do' list. Can you post photos once you have done yours?

Yes, I will post photos, CQ - but don't hold your breath, lol. It will no doubt take me a while - everything does, it seems! Your location sounds idyllic. I have found toads here too, miles from the nearest water! I expect yours must be very happy, out in the woods

I hope it has found another safe hidey hole!
