A while ago, I put a seed tray (without drainage holes) on the back garden. We left in to fill when it rains. It's amazing just how many living things have colonized. Lots of wriggling and skating insects. It's lovely for our little one to look at.

That's such a lovely idea Trisha instead of spending money on toys that hardly get touched. I was looking for a baby gift and went to a big Mothercare but was also wanting a small present for the older child too and was so disappointed at the toy section. I couldn't buy anything!

Ella, we dig in the back garden. We find worms and bug type things. All have to handled and studied at length. Nothing better than holding a snail and watching it's head transform. Nice....

My son was always in his element with things like that Trisha. We were lucky enough to have a stream at the end of our garden with the most wonderous things in it

I brought my daughter up to have a fascination for nature, and it has stayed with her to this day.

My grandchildren just love being involved in the garden with nature. We try to have a few interesting bits on the go for them to see. Never seemed to have the time with our own children !

My daughter was absolutely fascinated by animals. I remember her bringing home a dead bird. When I explained that it wasn't sleeping. She decided that she would keep it anyway as it was so beautiful. It was a blue tit.
I only just managed to convince her that a proper burial was the done thing. I didn't want her to see it rotting away......

That's a really sweet story 6herry. How wonderful childhood is when all these things are new and magical (I don't mean dead birds) and children get so excited about the things you take for granted as an adult e.g Father Christmas

We used to have newts in our house too lol. She loved them. We thought there only was one, but we found a total of four one day.
