My dad got a smart meter a couple of days ago. Apparently it resets so every day you know how much you’ve used. He wants to know how when he gets up in the morning he’s already used 80p when the only thing that’s on is his fridge freezer. He unplugs everything so there’s nothing else on.
I was supposed to ask the engineers when they came to fit my smart meters today between 8 and 12. I would have but THEY NEVER BLOODY TURNED UP.
I’ve been on their online chat twice and hung on the phone for 3/4 of an hour being passed from department to department until someone said they’d contact the engineer and phone me back within the hour. That was 4 hours ago.
So I went on the online chat again and apparently the appointment is still “active” and they could possibly turn up anytime up to 8 O clock. It’s now 7 and I’m pretty sure I’m not going to see anyone.
What if I’d taken time off work to do this. It makes me so mad I’m feeling very Karenish. I think I want to speak to the manager.

Did the engineers ever turn up Magggzzz ?
We had our meter fitted about 5 months ago. We went round the house switching everything off to try and keep in the green budget zone. We are rarely in green. I have got into the habit of switching lights off. Fridge/freezer's I am told are power guzzlers, particularly the older they are. So a catch 22. Do you invest in a new appliance to save power and pennies in the long term ?
We've had led bulbs since they came out, yes they cost more at the time but they don't blow like the old ones do, so they soon pay for themselves.
I must admit to still having things plugged in.
My OH said that using the slow cooker instead of the oven, even though it's on all day to cook, still costs less than making a meal in the oven. So I will use this more often than not, might be cook for Jamies one pot meals too.
My combined gas and electric off EDF costs £62.00 per month, we are on a fixed Tarif until January. If it doubles come January it's still only going to be £124 pm, with a 100% increase. I hope i'm right about that. This house doesn't seem to cost much, it's even warm in the winter. I am so pleased that we decided to "Live small" can't imagine how others will manage with 4 bedroom houses +. No judgement but it's got very trendy/fashionable for young families now to build massive extentions and each child have their own room, so I guess these are the ones who are going to really feel it.
Sorry, slightly off topic but will mention it or I'll have to start another thread. My boiler chap said to save money easily.. when you wash your hands only use the cold tap and soap/handwash so the boiler doesn't kick in. It makes sense when you think about how many times you and your family wash their hands in a day.
There is a lot to be said for being part of a group, and the support and friendship that is gained from this.
I’ve ended up having to have a new boiler. It’s going to take years to save that sort of money back. I keep trying to wind down the stuff in my very old chest freezer but it just gets filled back up again. I know it’s going to scare me when I do get the meter fitted. Now rearranged to September although I have no actual faith they’ll turn up.
If you can, and I know it isn’t easy, hoover round and behind your fridges and freezers, hoover off the dust that clings to the back, this stops the motor/condensers from working so hard.
