Gerald Durrell - we read "My Family & Other Animals" at school and I really loved the TV series of "The Durrells", Gerry was shown to be an unusual young boy with an obsession for animals.
Trevor Howard - starred in one of my favourite films of all time, Brief Encounter.
Always felt quite sympathetic to Catherine of Aragon, dumped by Henry VIII for Anne Boleyn (who also got her comeuppance of course!)
I feel so sorry for his family, they've been through hell for the last 3 years and it appears Kate tried every avenue she could to get him some relief from the symptoms and lasting damage they'd done. I hope they can all find peace and aren't badgered while they're trying to grieve.
1895 – Wilhelm Röntgen publishes a paper detailing his discovery of a new type of radiation, which later will be known as x-rays
Little known fact, an ancestor of my OH actually discovered x-rays some 110 years before Wilhelm Röntgen:-
"William Morgan conducted scientific experiments and in 1785, he communicated a paper to the Royal Society on the passage of electric discharges inside a glass tube. When there was a vacuum, no electric discharge could pass but by admitting a very small quantity of air the glass glowed a green colour. Although he did not know it, Morgan had produced X-rays 110 years before Röntgen in 1895"
Spain is somewhere that many of us have been to on vacation, it's amazing really that it only became a democracy as recently as 1978.
Apparently "the Eiffel Tower was shut down to visitors Wednesday because of a strike over contract negotiations, the day the Paris monument marks 100 years since the death of its creator, Gustave Eiffel" - hope nobody made a special journey to Paris just to mark the occasion.
My OH asked me for a list of things I wanted as it made it easier for him, which I was quite happy with, so I got things I was expecting but he also bought me a pair of very snuggly UGG slippers, which are the right size and much appreciated.
I can well remember hearing about the Indian Ocean earthquake in 2004 - I was sitting in the bath with the radio on when they reported the appalling events of that day, nature showed that although we humans think we run things, we don't really. A former colleague was visiting Sri Lanka at the time but fortunately was unaffected as they had changed their plans at the last minute and instead of staying on the coast, went inland the day before .... a real stroke of luck!
