So, Liz Truss has resigned. Might apply for a registration into the Guinness World Records : 2 sovereigns in less than 3 days and only 6 weeks in office !
Is their anyone you would like to see running your country Shaliby? who do you think would be a good replacement?
Well, the big problem is ...nobody at the moment! I'd rather say Marine Le Pen could be appropriate for the job...if she wasn't RN. Moreover, she'll never be elected without the support of some further right wing groups. So Emmanuel Macron sort of was the least worst - and I've no idea who will come next !
No wonder you don't know much about her. Neither did i till she won the Prize. Remember reading "Les années" "The Years", considered as her masterpiece... And ...not a book I kept when I moved and had to get rid of quite a lot of them. "Feminist", woke culture supporter, as well as pro-Palestinian and supporter of Jean-Luc Mélanchon, leader of a left wing party (much contested but strong.) In my opinion, awarded more for her political implication than her literary achievement. Links: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Ernaux
Well, Bellatrix, I wouldn't say he is so popular ... He was elected twice (2017-2022) mostly for fear of a far-right or far-left victory, with a large rate of abstention, and many of us have been quite disappointed. At the moment, approval rating : 39,4 % Main criticism : priority given to EU, lack of anticipation of the threatening energy crisis, and a certain tendency to disregard the Parliament (where he no longer has absolute majority). Nicknamed "Jupiter" by cartoonists. Next main issue : raise the retirement age. In spite of all this, the man is attractive, cultivated, and ...a very good actor (Brigitte must have been a super teacher). But I can't trust him any longer.
Oh, Lidl is established in France too, and has become more attractive for the last years than it was at first. I like their "special" sales ( Italian, Greek, American food...), rather good wine, and must say their "Silvercrest" brand ( domestic appliance) is ***** The main negative point (in my opinion) is a rather irregular supply, their suddenly running short of some basic product you expected to find. When I lived near Paris, one of my favourite stores was Marks'and Spencer's !
Hello, dear friends "Baked Camembert" is a good idea, though without adding olive oil and garlic (one of your chef Jamie Oliver's recipes, if I'm not mistaken ?) In Normandy, no olive oil, only butter and cream ! If you can find goat cheese in a round box, you can prepare it in the same way. For some years, it has become trendy to pour a trickle of honey over goat cheese. And eat some figs, grapes and nuts with it. Ok if you like "sweet/salty" blend. And what about "Tartiflette" ( in the winter )? www.myparisiankitchen.com/en/tartiflette-french-alps-reblochon-cheese-gratin/ Though we have over 1000 sorts of cheese in France, one of my favourite recipes in the summer is "Greek feta" with sliced tomatoes, olives, fennel (optional), some rosemary, oregano or basil and olive oil. Bon appétit !
Thanks for the challenge ! I bet "oop North" means "Up in the North"? Here, we'd say "Chez les ch'is" (named after a successful film). "Cht'i", or "cht'imi" - the name given to the dialect in use in the north of France, and people from that part of the country. And yes, it's been quite chilly for a few days (5 to 7 ° in the morning, and only 18° in my flat, but we're asked to spare gas and electricity. In a few days, I'm going to spend some days with relatives nearby, and enjoy a big fire in the fireplace ! "baiss" = XOXO
Bellatrix, I just feel as your dear mother does : "saw her in, saw her out", and when the crown, the sceptre and the orb were taken off the coffin ...And the final "God save the King", when Charles - oh no, didn't cry, but ...just winked to hold back his tears...the grief of a son burying his mother, the dignity of a newly appointed king ...Great! I must add, as I watched the BB9 coverage, how perfect the footage (is it right?) was from the beginning to the end!
Sorry, dear friends, I just couldn't help laughing ...It's so ...ridiculous ! Just hope they'll appoint a lady in charge of men's andropause and prostate troubles !
Here in France, "sanitary products" are free only for students, and several associations are campaigning for a free access to every women. In the small working class city where I used to be a teacher, 5000 € have been allowed for setting 2 free sanitary towel distributors.
By the way, do you know , in French slang, "Les Anglais ont débarqué" ("The English have landed" )means "having one's period ? It dates back to ...two centuries ago, after the lost (or won, on your side) battle of Waterloo, France being for some time occupied by British soldiers wearing a red uniform. (Not really acceptable ).
dear friends I've spent the last 5 hours or so watching Queen Elizabeth's funeral BBC coverage on You Tube. Difficult to find an accurate word : amazing, breathtaking ... heartbreaking. Maybe I'm one of the oldest members of this forum who can remember watching her coronation ceremony on TV - so, the crown, the sceptre and the globe on the coffin, OMG...The beginning and the end of an age ... Sure I had never witnessed and will not ever see anything equal to it ! May your dear Queen rest in peace and may the Lord bless King Charles and his family ! (I like your little prince and his sister, they must be about the same age as Charles and Ann when their mother became queen).
Hello, Jazzy ! How patient, "disciplined",you, British, still are ! Here, for years, no one seems to know what "queuing up means". People rushing to get on a bus or the tube you might as well got trampled !
