Yes, you can buy it in most of the bigger supermarkets :)
Thanks Becjyboo - got pectin AND preserving sugar. Made tayberry & strawberry jam from my frozen stock all turned out great and my SIL thought so too and she is one mean yoghurt maker!
Strawberries don't have a lot of pectin which sets the jam - you can use preserving sugar or pectin and you can also use lemon peel in the jam which adds pectin
Thanks Beckyboo, I'll try a small batch with lemon peel, if it fails I'll have to go with preserving sugar, can I buy this in Tesco??
We always bought fresh Lin but this year having moved house into the town and being a stones throw from an Iceland, realised they had them already frozen with bacon included. We bought some to try and they were ok so used them this year :)
Thanks Bella, actually I went into Iceland today & got them - having tonight with fried liver & sliced ginger, and mashed potatoes.
I remember there have been mention about bean sprouts and also cooking pulses such as kidney beans they give off a toxin??
Thanks mobay. I must say that I had to laugh when I Googled "what toxins do bean sprouts give off?" and read through all the articles. I wash our home grown bean sprouts and in fact all tomatoes & other veggies & fruit that we want to eat raw in boiled water that has been cooled. I think it is not the sprouts themselves but the fact that they are not washed properly prior to consumption that have caused the problem. Oh yes, of course wash your hands first before washing veg/fruit. Having to keep our processing unit when we had our rainbow trout farm up to BRC standards taught us a lot about food hygiene, mind blowing!
Just bought Dhal made by Assoka. Only £1.29 and microwavable in 2minutes. Very nice. This one was made of black beans but I am going to try one made with chick peas as well. Buy at Tescos. Badpuss.
This is the one I use but I soak the dhal first until soft and throw it into the veg/chicken/meat curry, really very tasty and so easy.
The new boilers don't have hot water cylinders. The heat is instant.
Isn't it wonderful? No huge cylinder gathering dust.
Bellatrix I have a tiny cupboard next to my washing machine in the utility room that has shelves in it and a radiator on one side that acts as my airing cupboard .
I have discovered several references now and it seems certain types of food can cause this "melting" effect to happen including salty food like bacon and ham. Aluminium has been linked to Alzheimer's so I shall definite be avoiding wrapping or cooking in foil from now on.
Hi SD, I made some yesterday - 8oz Plain flour, 4oz Butter (cold and cut up), 1 egg (whisked). I do it in the food processor with a blade attachment. Put the flour and butter in and wizz until well mixed then add some beaten egg (you might not need all of it) until it starts to clump together. Then take it out and knead it until it holds together and you can roll it out. Bake mince pies at about 190c for 15 minutes. I egg wash with the left over bit of egg if there is any and add a splash of milk to brush the tops. After I brush them I either bake them or freeze them and then bake from frozen when I need them.
This is my favourite pastry recipe - it takes seconds to make.
From Rachel Allen's book
Best pastry ever - beats Mr Kipling's hand down! We made 24 mince pies, reheated some of them yesterday in the microwave and the pastry was as though it was freshly made. We love it Beckyboo, thank you.
I hope this is the right place. I made a moisturiser and a dusting spray. Tomorrow I hope to clean my oven with baking soda & lemon juice I think.
Great fun DIYing soap, moisturisers, toners. I cheat - I read the ingredients on what I currently use which is Monsia Skincare and then make a body cream using the 2 main ingredients. e.g. my Monsia range contains shea butter & jojoba esters (oil) so I bought shea butter, jojoba oil, lanolin & castor bean oil and used lavendar essential oil for the smell. You have to experiment by mixing a little at a time until you get the consistancy right then I bottle them and stick them in the fridge until needed.
Lemon & Tea Tree All Purpose Cleaner Bucket of water 1/4 cup Vinegar 10 drops Lemon Essential Oil 5 drops Oregano Essential Oil 2 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil Mix all ingredients thoroughly. This mixture has powerful antiseptic properties, great for floors, counter tops, stove tops, and tile. Store the leftover in a squirt bottle for later use.
